Palmer Plunders Grammar FP’s

On Saturday 2nd Ellon travelled to Rubislaw to play Grammar FP’s in the quarter final of the Johnston Rosebowl Cup.

After losing the toss Ellon were inserted and the opening partnership of Ean Mackie and Huw Owen did not last long.  In fact it was only 3 balls before Mackie was clean bowled by opposition skipper Jim Bramald.

That was the last success that Grammar had in a while as Steve Palmer joined his captain at the middle and the pair put on 75 runs for the second wicket with Palmer looking dangerous after a barrage of 4’s.  Just as the pair were starting to turn the match in Ellon’s favour Owen was bowled by Tom Murray for 23.

Steve Dalton joined Palmer at the wicket and they continued the onslaught by hitting the bad ball to all parts of the ground.  So much so in fact every time that Palmer came on strike the fielders all seemed to disappear to all parts of the boundary to try and stop the inevitable.  Palmer eventually ran out of puff and was clean bowled for a well-earned 57.

Neil Smith joined Dalton at the crease but this was only for a few balls when Dalton decided to try and push on the run rate and was caught by Johnson off the bowling of Morrison for 35.

Chris Watson was the next man in but did not last too long when he took 5 strides down the wicket and completely missed the ball for a humiliating dismissal.

Veteran Ian Duncan made his comeback for the club after suffering a horrendous spate of injuries including a detached retina and a broken finger.  He looked like he had never been away and was soon is his stride.  Unfortunately Smith was out attempting another lofted drive but only succeeded in hitting it straight to cover and was out for 19

Kenny Hutcheson joined Duncan and took it upon himself to hit Ellon towards a commanding total.  Kenny blasted the ball all over Rubislaw and he closed Ellon’s Innings on 198 off their allotted 40 overs.

Captain Owen decided to open the bowling with the fiery Ross Wade and Hutcheson.  Wade bowled a good line and length and the batsmen were struggling to keep him out.  This was rewarded with the 1st wicket when Ian Hopkin popped his slower ball into the air and Dalton took the catch with consummate ease.

Hutcheson picked up the next wicket when he bowled another “long-hop” which Johnson hit straight to Alistair Stallard in the covers.

Stallard was brought on to replace the expensive Hutcheson whose 4 overs conceded 22 runs including 14 wides!!  Initially Stallard struggled with his line and length but he produced a beautiful Yorker, which accounted for Grammar’s star batsman Stuart Anderson for 16.

Watson was brought into the attack after Wade bowled his allotted overs.  He immediately made up from his poor batting by picking up a wicket with his second ball, which clean bowled Luigi Govil.

Watson struck again in a couple of overs this time by removing Harvey Morrison with a superb caught and bowled effort.  By now the Grammar innings was it total disarray and in his next over Watson bowled Murray for 9.

Duncan was brought into the attack and he rewarded the faith shown in him by his captain by having Hiney caught by Stallard in the covers.

Next wicket to fall was Tomlinson when he became Watson’s fourth wicket of the day when he played all round a straight one.

Owen then brought on himself and Palmer to give them a chance of turning their arms over.  Owen had Lloyd LBW with his fourth ball and in the very next over the Grammar innings was over when Palmer had Fi Bramald acrobatically caught by Watson at silly point to give Ellon a morale boosting victory.

Ellon are on their travels again next week when they go to Duthie Park to play Portcullis.  Hopefully with another strong team on show Ellon will get their 1st league victory of the season.
